Step-by-Step: How to Change Oil in a Lawn Mower Engine

Step 1: Warm Up the Engine

  • Run the mower for a few minutes to warm the oil
  • Warm oil drains more completely and removes more contaminants

Step 2: Shut off & disconnect engine

  • Turn off the lawn mower
  • Disconnect the spark plug wire for safety

Step 3: Position the drain pan

  • Park lawn mower on a flat, level surface
  • Engage parking brake (if applicable)
  • Place drain pan under the mower drain plug

  • Remove the engine drain plug with your socket wrench

  • Let the engine oil drain completely

Tip: Kawasaki dipsticks rest on top of the fill tube and are not threaded. Avoid over tightening.

Step 4: Replace the oil filter

  • Use an oil filter wrench to remove the old filter

  • Add a thin layer of oil to the gasket on the new Kawasaki oil filter before installing.

Step 5: Add new oil

  • Use a funnel to slowly add new oil per your manual’s specs
  • Fill the oil to the recommended level (do not overfill)

Reference your engine’s Kawasaki Owners Manual to confirm the oil type needed. KTECH oils are available through your authorized Kawasaki Engines dealer.

Step 6: Check the oil level

  • Insert the dipstick (rest it, don’t screw it in)
  • Check the oil level and top off if needed

Step 7: Reconnect spark plug & test

  • Reconnect the spark plug wires to the spark plug
  • Start the engine and let it run briefly
  • Shut off the engine and re-check the oil level

Step 8: Run and Recheck

Start the engine briefly, then turn it off and recheck the oil level. Add more if needed.

Why Changing Lawn Mower Oil Is Important

Engine oil:

  • Lubricates internal components
  • Reduces friction and wear
  • Prevents overheating
  • Removes contaminants and debris

Over time, oil breaks down and becomes dirty. Failing to change it can reduce engine performance and shorten engine life.

Routine oil changes help protect your investment and keep your mower performing at its best.

When Should You Change Lawn Mower Oil?

For most residential mower engines:

  • First oil change: After the first 5–8 hours of operation
  • Ongoing maintenance: Every 50–100 hours of operation or annually (whichever comes first)

Tip: Commercial mowers or dusty conditions may need more frequent service, and it’s always better to change oil a little early than too late.

Kawasaki recommends following your engine’s Owner’s Manual for service intervals.

Choosing the Right Oil for Your Kawasaki Engine

Using the correct oil type is critical for performance and engine longevity. Always check your owner’s manual for the recommended oil to use for your engine. For most Kawasaki 4-cycle engines, we recommend:

  • KTECH™ PRO 50 Full Synthetic Oil: A premium dual-grade oil approved for both gasoline- and diesel-powered Kawasaki engines, offering excellent protection across a wide range of temperatures and operating conditions.
  • SAE 10W-30, 10W-40, 20W-50, or 15W-50 (common temperature ranges)
  • Other viscosities depending on climate and model

Common Oil Change Mistakes to Avoid

  • Overfilling the engine
  • Forgetting to replace the drain plug washer
  • Using automotive oil instead of small-engine oil

  • Not checking oil level after refilling

Avoiding these mistakes helps safeguard reliable performance all season long.
